Ikara–Wilpena Pound, gorges, lookouts and salt-lake country — a short run from Port Augusta and Hawker.
Yadlamalka Pastoral’s stations sit between the Flinders Ranges and Lake Torrens. This page is for visitors exploring that same country — the national park, the gorge roads, and the outback towns.
Practical note: fuel and supplies at Port Augusta or Hawker; check parks.sa.gov.au for heat, fees and road closures before you go. Gorge roads are often unsealed.
Ikara (Wilpena Pound)
The natural amphitheatre at the heart of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Walk to the Hills Homestead and Wangara Lookouts for the interior of the pound. Scenic flights from Wilpena show the ring of ranges at full scale. Visitor centre at Wilpena is the usual first stop.
Brachina, Bunyeroo and the lookouts
Drive the Bunyeroo Scenic Drive and stop at Razorback Lookout — one of the park’s signature views. Brachina Gorge has the Geological Trail and, later in the day, a chance of yellow-footed rock-wallabies on the scree. Hucks Lookout (and Stokes) off the Hawker–Blinman road are easy sunset stops.
Outback roads and Lake Torrens
West of the ranges the country opens to saltbush plains and the white edge of Lake Torrens when the season shows it. This is pastoral lease and lake country, not a swimming spot — go for the space, the light, and the long sealed/unsealed runs. Emus and eagles are common on the verges.
Hawker, Quorn, Blinman, Leigh Creek, Parachilna, Arkaroola, Marree
Hawker — nearest town for fuel, food, a bed; Jeff Morgan Gallery if you like big landscape paintings.
Rawnsley Park Station — working sheep station on the south side of Ikara–Wilpena Pound. A practical base for the pound, with scenic flights and 4WD tours when they’re running.
Quorn — Pichi Richi Railway on the way up from Port Augusta.
Blinman — historic copper town; mine tours when running.
Leigh Creek — northern Flinders service town (supermarket, fuel, a bed); a useful base if you're heading further north.
Marree — further north of Leigh Creek, at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks. Fuel, a pub, and the jump-off for a scenic flight over Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre. The road in is sealed; the tracks beyond are not.
Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre — fly over it from Marree. The lake is a vast salt pan that only rarely holds water; from the air is how most people see it. This is well beyond the Flinders gorge loop; check outback road reports before you go.
Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary — well north of Blinman in the northern Flinders. Ridge country, 4WD (including the Ridgetop Tour), and dark-sky observatories. Distinct from Arkaroo Rock near Wilpena.
Parachilna — Prairie Hotel, native produce, a cold drink after the gorge loop.
Port Augusta — last full supermarket and the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden before you head north.
Arkaroo Rock — Adnyamathanha ochre and charcoal paintings (official park site; respect closures and stay on the path).
